My Shot List and Music Video Plan

Here is a brainstorm of my ideas. I brainstormed each one of my ideas and explained the details of each individual idea I had.

Here is a list of shots that I plan to use when filming my music video. Next to some of the shots is an explanation as to what I'm trying to show by filming these particular shots.

Finished Digipak

So there is my completed my digipak. I took a picture that originally looked like this:

In the original there is no colour and it means the panel is lost to other bolder sections. However i really liked the image itself and its connotations so i decide to edit it. I went on to the hue and saturation and enhanced the red/pink colour of the image. Enhancing this colour meant that it matched the autumn feel of the other picture with mac miller, it helps to give an overall theme to digipak. The idea of autumn is in direct juxtaposition with the happy vibrant party of the front cover. This helps to show the range of emotions in mac millers songs.

Conventions of a Music Video

In the video, 'Best Day Ever' by Mac Miller, TreeJ used some conventions of music video. For example, he used non-synchronus sound, like in the beginning of the video, there is a short clip of Mac Miller rapping when he's younger. There is also a slight narrative, throughout the video, he's walking through the park and sitting down with his friends. This really follows the theme of 'The Best Day Ever', just a relaxed day out with his friends, a typical nice day. However, he doesn't only use narrative, he also uses as-live, when walking through the park, he walks along the park mouthing along to the song, it flicks between narrative shots and shot of him singing. Overall, he conveys the atmosphere of a happy day. I hope to take influence from this in my video as well as putting my own spin on it.

Taking Pictures

Today, I went to the park to take some pictures for the inside of my Digipak. I've faced a few obstacles in trying to do this. The first was the weather, sadly this is something that could not be controlled. When asking around, people seemed to concur that a sunny day was the best pathetic fallacy of happiness. Unfortunately, waiting for a sunny day became very tedious and caused me to miss the first deadline. I decided that on the weekend, I would go and take pictures wind, rain or shine. Luckily for me, Autumn is a very colourful season, so although I ended up with a different image than I intended, it still turned out okay. The second problem I encountered, was the camera. I planned to use a Cannon 550D from the school. But when my friend Jamie was using them, he ended up loosing the case and lense causing Ms. Flavell to put a temporory 'ban' on use of the cameras out of school. This meant that I had to use a different camera. But again, it all turned out okay, I just used my own and now I'm going to transfer it onto the side of my digipak. When I came home, I put the pictures on my iPhoto and flagged about five that I was considering using. Here they are:

I decided to use this one:

I'll post the edited version later.

Progress

Today, I have been working on the back cover which will be the tracklist page. It looks like this:
I decided to use a blackberry barcode because I thought it would appeal to a majority of my audience.

Quote Page Finished

Problems I faced and how I solved them:

  • The picture was the wrong size, I tried to copy and paste some of the leaves to the bottom but because of the different tones and lighting it looked amateur, so I decided to stretch the picture and crop it. As you can see, this was a good solution.
  • The 'It's All Disney' Was too dark. So I highlighted each bit individually and made it a light blue, which actually ended up making it better.

Front Cover Finished

Well, finally, I've finished my front cover. I've faced a few problems. I downloaded a Digipak template and transfered my front cover onto it. The issue I faced was that theh picture was rectangle but the Digipak front cover template was a square. I decided to add a black box on the top and use a smudge effect to melt them together. I used a word generator website:

Then I added the title onto the top of the picture, so again this was another idea that changed. When I pasted the song name onto my page, it blended in to the background too much for it, so I decided to put a glow effect on it and that helped to make it stand out. And here is the finished front cover:

Beginning To Create My Digipak (1/11/11)

Yesterday I began to create my digipak, I think it was inevitable that I was not going to stick completely to my plan. I decided against using a picture of Mac Miller that another photographer had taken. I decided instead to take a screen shot from one of his videos. That way, I could gave a picture of Mac Miller but be a bit more original. I began the lesson by print screening different bits of different Mac Miller videos. After about half an hour of doing this I looked through the screen shots I had saved. I decided I liked this one the best:
I opened it up on photoshop and decided to incooperate my earlier ideas by drawing colours around the figure of Mac Miller. I created a new layer and used the brush tool to draw around it in the light colours I said I would, like this:
Then I began to add on layers, like this:
I played around with the colour pallet to find lighter/happier colours like I'd planned, I liked using the pallet because it was easier to change the tone:
A shape began to form and after an hour or so, it looked like this:
While I thought that this looked nice, I realised that this was not enough to write about in my exam. So I decided to blur the people in the background. I did it by highlighting the background and using the blur tool, then changing the amount of blurriness.

So after those few hours, this is what I had achieved.
Next lesson, I hope to explore photoshop tools more and widen my range of knowledge of photoshop.
